Appalachian Heritage Genealogy

Over the past 24 years, Linda has been researching her roots...her maternal grandparents Henry Kennedy & Sarah Blankenship.  Henry was from McDowell County, West Virginia and Sarah was from Buchanan County, Va.  ...her paternal grandparents Thomas Costello & Dorothy Forand are from Middlesex County of Massachusetts. I have also been researching my husband and children's ancestors. My husband's paternal grandparents are Chellie Albie Hinchey and Charlotte Elizabeth Morris.  Chellie was originally from Wilkes Co., N.C.  Charlotte was from Washington County, Va. His maternal grandparents are Ellis Roosevelt Belcher and Lola Mildred Sauls from Russell Co., Va.  This is a constant labor of love & an ongoing project so check back for updates.   We invite you to join our family tree group site for the Kennedy & Blankenship and the Hinchey & Belcher sides of our families. Kennedy & Evans:

Daniel "Squire Dan" Kennedy, b. abt. 1857 in Tazewell Co., Va., s/o Ali (Eli) Canada / Kennedy and Christena “Tena” Whitt.  d. 1931 in Bradshaw, WV.  In 1881, he married his first wife, Pheobe Louise Evans. b. abt. 1864 in McDowell Co., WV and died in 1888 in McDowell Co.  In 1889, Dan married Victoria Evans, Pheobe's sister.  Dan died in 1931 in Bradshaw, McDowell Co., WV.  More on Dan Kennedy & family...

Adam Blankenship, b. May 1872-1874 in Buchanan Co., Va. Son of Mary Blankenship and poss. Daniel David Blankenship (out of wedlock). Died 10 Mar 1943 in Buchanan Co. Costello & Joyce (Irish Lines):

Michael “Papa Mikey” Joseph Costello, son of Thomas Costello & Mary Joyce. Born in 1875, County Clare, Ireland, d. 3 May 1954, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  Married Mary Ann Sullivan in 1911.
Sullivan & Galvin (Irish Lines):

Mary Ann Sullivan, d/o C. Daniel Sullivan and Elizabeth Galvin, b. 1878 in County Kerry, Ireland.  Died in 19 July 1942 in Middlesex County, MA.  She married Michael J. Costello 1911 in Middlesex County, Ma. 

Forand & Brodeur (French Canadian lines):

Delphis Clovis Forand b. 5 Aug 1875, Quebec, Canada, s/o Joseph Forand & Marie Domithilde (Domitilde) Brodeur. Died in 1951 in Middlesex County, Ma.  Married Laura "Lora" Elizabeth Forrant in abt. 1910 in possibly Rhode Island.

Jolly & Forrant (French Canadian line):

Laura "Lora" Elizabeth Forrant, b. 8 Feb 1886, Spencer, Massachusetts to Octave (Austin) "Pepe" Forrant and Delia Jolly.  Died 1952 in Belmont, Ma.  Married Delphis Clovis Forand in about 1910 in possibly Rhode Island.

Hinchey & Carroll:

Thomas "Jeff" Jefferson Hinchey (Hincher), b. abt. 1831-1849 in Chapel Hill, Orange Co., NC to William Hinchey (Hinshaw) and Charlotte Carroll.  Married Martha Ann Shoemate / Shumate 1868 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.  He left her and then married Millie Ann Absher in abt. 1882.

Morris & Sturgill:

Charlotte Elizabeth Morris b. 7 Mar 1900 in Abingdon, Washington Co., Va. to William James Morris and Rosa “Rosy” C. Sturgill. Married 1) Frank Preston Steagall in before 1920.  After his death she married Chellie (Charlie) Abry / Albie Hinchey in abt. 1931-34 in Washington Co., Va.  Died in 1968 in Wash. Co., Va.

Belcher & Hubbard:

Ellis Roosevelt Belcher, b. in 1904 in Russell Co., Va., to John Wesley Belcher and Mary Myrtle Hubbard. Married Lola Mildred Sauls after 1920 in Russell Co., Va.  Died in 1964 in Washington Co., Va.

Sauls & Stump:

Lola Mildred Sauls, b. 1903 in Russell Co., Va., to Edward Sauls and Rachel Stump.  Married Ellis Roosevelt Belcher after abt. 1920 in Russell Co., Va., died 1988 in Washington Co., Va.
